Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker

The surviving Resistance faces the First Order once more as Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron’s journey continues. With the power and knowledge of generations behind them, the final battle commences.

Our take: See it in theaters, you won’t get another theatrical release of a Star Wars movie in a while.
Post-credit scene: Nope. Go home and re-watch this week’s episode of The Mandolorian instead.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens follows Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Han Solo’s search for Luke Skywalker and their fight in the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa and veterans of the Rebel Alliance, against Kylo Ren and the First Order, a successor to the Galactic Empire.

The Good: We got Star Wars back.
The Bad:
A structural rehash of A New Hope.
The Ugly: People have gone a bit whackadoo when it comes to Star Wars movies. Toxic fandom is strong with this one.

Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away . . . There’s political unrest, slavery, romance, clones, and of course–war. Add that to a lot of cool CGI (alongside some very bad CGI) and lackluster plots that are–at times–clearly just trying to get boxes checked and you get this trilogy. In all of it’s glory (or infamy).

The Good: Ewan McGregor’s performances are all masterful and it’s clear that he took his time in studying Guinness’ work. We are blessed to be getting an Obi-wan series out of him.
The Bad:
CGI Yoda has always offended some people, but it wasn’t until watching it again that we realized we agree. He’s also not Baby Yoda, so honestly, just get out.
The Ugly: These movies are awkwardly paced and at times, painfully slow. They’re honestly hard to watch and if you don’t fast-forward through pod-racing, are you really living the sort of life you deserve?

Star Wars: The Original Trilogy

A farm boy, a princess, and a scoundrel walk into a bar. Technically this does happen, but it’s not incredibly important to the plot of these films. There’s some daddy issues, mild incest, bounty hunting, space fights, romance, betrayal, and of course–war. That seems to be something of an ongoing theme in Star Wars shockingly enough. But these films captured the hearts and imaginations of generations and laid the groundwork for not only a universe, but film technology, franchises, and–most importantly–baby Yoda. (Puppet Yoda had to walk so that Baby Yoda could fly.)

The Good: Innovative and imaginative.
The Bad: A little ahead of the technology of the time.
The Ugly: Remasters and rewrites have plagued some parts of these films. Hayden Christensen force ghosts are one thing, but #HanShotFirst and you’ll never convince us otherwise.
